Bermuda Gold Cup 2002 - Local Skipper Leads Way for International Fleet at Bermuda Gold Cup
HAMILTON, BERMUDA-(12-10-2002) Three skippers are undefeated after the first day of racing in the Qualifying Round of the 54th annual Bermuda Gold Cup. Round robin match racing for the 16 skippers and teams took place in International One Design (IOD) class sloops on Hamilton Harbour in perfect conditions. Racing continues through Monday and the top six skippers will advance into Round One of the Bermuda Gold Cup, the fourth stop on the Swedish Match Tour, which begins on Wednesday.

The fleet of 16 international teams was divided into two groups, with Group 1 completing two flights of matches and the Group 2 completing three flights.

In Group 1, Marten Hedlund of Sweden and Andy Horton of Annapolis, Md. won both of their matches and are the only two undefeated skippers in their group.

“It all comes down to timing,” said Hedlund of the complex IOD. “We had some issues to work out on the timing of the starts and the mark roundings, but we will work on that tomorrow before racing.”

Glenn Astwood of Hamilton, Bermuda, who is sailing as “Team Bacardi” after qualifying through Bermuda’s National Match Racing Championship, the Bacardi Cup, won all three of his Group 2 matches and as the only undefeated skipper in his group, he goes into tomorrow’s racing with an unspoken advantage.

“It was all good,” said Astwood. “We won three and there were some tough races, but I really need to thank my crew for keeping us going and for making us win.”

The Bermuda International Women’s Match Race Championship made its debut in Hamilton Harbour this morning with Lotte Pedersen of Denmark, Paula Lewin of Bermuda, and Marie Björling of Sweden all undefeated with two wins each. Round robin racing continues tomorrow.

Results and photos will be posted on www.bermudagoldcup.com.

The event is hosted by the RBYC and the Bermuda Department of Tourism. Renaissance Reinsurance and Investors Guaranty are the Presenting Sponsors. Primary Sponsors are Bacardi, Colorcraft, Continental Airlines and Swedish Match Tour. Supporting sponsors are Cellular One, Coral Beach and Tennis Club, Horizons and Cottages, Izod, Northrock, Office Solutions, Smatt’s Cycles, Sonesta, Telecom, Waterloo House and Wedgwood.

The Bermuda Gold Cup is an Octagon-managed event.
